Orange cake with chocolate chips

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened

  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Zest of 2 oranges

  • ½ cup (120 ml) freshly squeezed orange juice

  • ½ cup (120 ml) plain yogurt or sour cream

  • 1 cup (170 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • Optional: powdered sugar or orange glaze for topping

Instructions:

  1. Prep the oven & pan

    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

    • Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan (or line with parchment paper).

  2. Mix dry ingredients

    • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

  3. Cream butter & sugar

    • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).

  4. Add eggs & flavor

    • Beat in eggs one at a time.

    • Add vanilla extract and orange zest.

  5. Add liquids

    • Mix in orange juice and yogurt (or sour cream). The batter may look slightly curdled — that’s okay!

  6. Combine with dry ingredients

    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.

  7. Fold in chocolate chips

    • Gently fold in the chocolate chips, reserving a few to sprinkle on top.

  8. Bake

    • Pour batter into the prepared pan.

    • Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top.

    • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  9. Cool & serve

    • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

    • Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with orange glaze if desired.
