Amish White Bread

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.

  2. Sprinkle yeast over the water. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.


2. Mix the Dough

  1. Add the vegetable oil and salt to the activated yeast mixture. Stir to combine.

  2. Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or stand mixer (dough hook) until a soft dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.


3. Knead the Dough

  1. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 6–8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

    • Stand mixer option: Knead for about 5 minutes on medium speed.

  2. Shape into a ball and place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat.

  3. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.


4. Shape the Loaves
