The most common, yet often undiagnosed, cause of excess mucus is acid reflux. This occurs when the stomach valve at the top of the stomach doesn’t close properly, allowing stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus and throat. While this acid is essential for digestion, it damages tissue when it reaches areas like the throat or sinuses, causing inflammation. As a defense, the body produces mucus to protect these damaged areas. This acid reflux can be accompanied by heartburn, but in many cases, only the mucus-related symptoms occur, a condition called silent reflux or gastrolaryngeal reflux disease (GLR).
Natural solution:
Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink it twice daily before meals. This helps close the stomach valve and reduce reflux. If the mucus decreases after a week, this indicates that acid reflux was likely the cause.
