How to Clean Tile Grout: A Simple and Effective Homemade Cleaner

  1. Mix the Cleaning Solution:
    • In a large bowl or container, combine 7 cups of water1/2 cup of baking soda1/3 cup of lemon juice, and 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Stir well to ensure the baking soda dissolves and everything is fully mixed. The solution will bubble a bit because of the reaction between the vinegar and baking soda—this is normal and part of the cleaning action!
  2. Transfer to a Spray Bottle:
    • Once the mixture is well combined, pour it into a spray bottle for easy application. You may need to use a funnel to avoid spilling.
  3. Spray the Grout:
    • Generously spray the grout lines on your tile floor or wall. Make sure the grout is thoroughly coated with the cleaning solution.
  4. Let it Sit:
    • Allow the solution to sit on the grout for 1 to 2 minutes. This gives the cleaning agents time to break down dirt, stains, and grime.
  5. Scrub the Grout:
    • After the solution has had time to work, grab a stiff-bristled brush (an old toothbrush works well) and begin scrubbing the grout lines. Use small circular motions to loosen the dirt and stains. For stubborn areas, you may need to apply a bit more solution and scrub again.
  6. Rinse and Wipe Clean:
    • After scrubbing, wipe down the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove any leftover cleaning solution and debris. You can also rinse the floor with water to ensure there’s no residue left behind.
  7. Dry the Area:
    • Dry the cleaned grout with a clean towel or allow it to air dry. Your grout should now look brighter and cleaner!
