Attention parents! Everyone should know this basic action that can save a child’s life in case of choking.

1. The baby is no longer breathing, but is conscious

Clive James, a St John Ambulance officer, said:

If a baby is choking, first place their head on your thigh and support them with your arm. Give them five blows on the back between the shoulder blades with your hand. While it used to be recommended to place the baby on your arm, the leg is safer and offers more support.

Check the mouth. If there’s still a blockage, turn the baby on their back and give up to five chest thrusts. Use two fingers to push inward and upward against the breastbone.

If the obstruction does not clear after three attempts and five chest thrusts, call an ambulance and continue until help arrives.
